"The (in)Patient Experience" is written by Mark Rudolph, MD, SFHM.
My passion is the provider-patient relationship and the communication that shapes the patient experience. I also believe strongly that the relationships we create and maintain with colleagues and employees throughout the workplace serve to improve our own satisfaction and greatly impact our ability to positively influence the patient experience.
I am a hospitalist physician and also VP of Patient Experience and Physician Development for Sound Physicians, a leading national hospitalist practice based in Tacoma, Washington and have received the distinction of Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine from the Society of Hospital Medicine.
I have held multiple leadership roles including Chief Hospitalist and Medicine Department Chair at Highline Medical Center in Burien, WA. Prior to my current role, I provided physician leadership as Chief Medical Officer for the Northwest Region of Sound Physicians from 2008 to 2012 and have developed various educational programs as Assistant Director of Physician Training and Development.
I have created educational materials for providers to improve their understanding of HCAHPS and its role in the Value Based Purchasing program. Additionally, I have created patient satisfaction and communication tools specifically for physicians and nurses, and have trained and mentored these providers in the hospital setting.
I am a graduate of The University of Michigan (BA, Economics, 1990), Case Western Reserve University (MD, 1996) and The New York Hospital - Cornell Medical Center Internal Medicine residency program (1999). I served as Chief Medical Resident (1999-2000) and Assistant Director of Graduate Medical Education (2000-2002) in the Department of Internal Medicine at NYU Downtown Hospital in New York City prior to pursuing hospital medicine full time in 2002.
